Plastiki: Plastic Bottles on the High Seas

While it’s not a country “meeting under the water” or up “high on a mountaintop”, the Plastiki expedition is an incredible story, and an amazing “statement”. You and your kids will definitely find this an extraordinary adventure! Imagine spending 3 years conjuring up, building, and then setting sail, on a 60Ft Catamaran made entirely out of old plastic bottles.. Look out “Astro Boy..” this is pretty cool! The project also reminds us about over consumption, resource waste and pollutants, including the thoughtless creation of harmful greenhouse gas emissions.

Plastiki, the recycled “plastic ship” is set to sail from San Francisco to Sydney Australia, sometime before the end of this year, stopping on the way at notable “tourist sites” like the Great Pacific Garbage Dump (check out our other article in this week’s In the News for more information.) The goal of the expedition is: to raise awareness of the global waste problem – then harness this awareness to focus development and resources towards smart solutions for the good of our planet…. ultimately to think smart by re-thinking waste as a resource.” After Plastiki’s voyage, the plan is to “transform” the ship into something new. From “cradle to cradle”. Check out the link to a CNN video on Plastiki and its creator, David De Rothschild.
