It’s a new year, a new decade and we are all participants as the 21st century marches on! The world seemed to wake up to climate change concerns in 2009, with 3 meetings throughout the year where heads of state and government gathered to express concern for what humankind is doing to our planet. Will this be the year that we move forward and actually come up with some concrete measures to address and stem some of these concerns? Time will tell. In the meantime, we hope that you will stick with Climate Mama, as we learn together how and why climate change matters to all of our families and how we all can feel empowered to make change and make a difference!
In this first new year’s Climate Mama News post, please join us as we recount Climate Mama’s journey up to the top of the Mauna Loa Volcano, where the world’s longest record of daily measurements on carbon dioxide (CO2) in our atmosphere have been measured. In December 2009, the world’s attention was drawn to climate change and varying degrees of expectations regarding outcomes from that meeting were either met, or not met; In the News, we look at what comes next! Don’t forget to check out our January Climate Mama, Greta Browne! And finally, we wanted to share with you a link one of readers sent to us, www.kidearth.us. KidEarth is a site set up by a 6th grader from California, Aitan Grossman, who wrote a song called “100 Generations.” The song’s message of concern, hope and inspiration, tells us to wake up to the realities of climate change and DO something. Aitan and his song are “doing something” as children the world over are being inspired to contribute videos and join their voices with Aitan’s to raise concern about climate change. If you are a teacher or a parent of any age, you may want to look at how 12 year olds have been able to empower and inspire others to help us see the dangers of climate change!
