It's a wRAP: Earth Day, Offsets, Inconvenient Youth and Furry Vengeance!

shutterstock_10164301April 23rd, the day after Earth Day….But wait; isn’t everyday supposed to be Earth Day? Sure it is, and we know you try your best every day for our planet. It is interesting however to see how Earth Day has become a “holiday.” And like many secular and non-secular holidays, Earth Day has taken on a “hallmark” feel and a commercial life of it’s own. Check out what our friends at Climate Counts have to say about “Green Watching” a new take on “Green Washing. ” Find out if the media companies that are jumping on the green bandwagon and are promoting and showcasing “Earth Day” programming are the same companies really “walking the walk” and trying to be more sustainable entities themselves; or are they just capitalizing on Earth Day and your environmental sensibilities?

Do you buy offsets when you fly? Quick Offset Refresher – an offset allows you to support an environmental project that otherwise wouldn’t be happening, and helps take greenhouse gases out of the atmosphere; as a counteract to your use of greenhouse gases. An easy thing to calculate, and an area where people often buy offsets is for plane trips.

Long story, but our reason for pointing this out is that Delta Airlines has an “Earth Day offer” whereby they will match any offsets you purchase from the Nature Conservancy between now and May 22nd, effectively “doubling” your impact and the offsets you buy! Seems like a good deal…they will match all offsets up to a maximum of $25,000…lets see if we can help reach that number soon!

Look for the US Senate to release it’s version of a clean energy and green jobs bill next week. Support those environmental organizations that are keeping the pressure on and trying to make sure the bill that is finally passed is a strong one.

Don’t forget to tell the teens in your life about a new program launched by The Climate Project on Earth Day, An Inconvenient Youth. The site allows interested teens to share their ideas and solutions on climate change.

In the News this week, we bring you some interesting ideas to discuss with the kids in your life on endangered species and habitat preservation. Check out our link to the social action campaign being launched by Participant Media, which coincides with the release of their new movie, Furry Vengeance, in theaters on April 30, 2010.
