Presidents Promises and Energy Independence: Video Peek of the Week

The Environmental Defense Fund has put together a powerful and interesting video, showing past US presidents, dating back 40 years, stressing the importance of moving away from our dependence on fossil fuels and finding new and renewable sources of energy to ensure a cleaner more sustainable future for our country and our planet. Watch this short video with the kids in your life. Do they recognize these presidents? Did they know this isn’t a “new” issue, but one we have been struggling with for many years? Talk to them about the politics of saying something in the moment – the difference between a political statement and the wish to actually create a policy shift and change; talk to them about how an administration may say something but does not want to or is not able to follow through.

Ask your kids if they think President Obama will be able to push through an energy bill that helps move us away from our dependence on fossil fuels? Do they, do you, think this is important? What is happening in your town, city, state or province to move towards renewal energy and to reduce current energy costs? Tell us what ideas your kids have and if they think it is possible to move beyond our current dependence on fossil fuels? For some great ideas when considering your energy choices, and how they impact your health, our environment and your wallet, check out our new partner, Repower at Home. Learn how you, your friends and your community can save energy, help the environment and save money too!
