Standing Up for Our Children: Fighting Against Climate Change

Our family is headed to Washington, DC this weekend to take part in the “hands around the White House” action against the building of the Keystone XL pipeline. In recognition of our trip, my friend Tom from Climate Bites reminded me about a video by Moms Against Climate Change. This organization was set up in 2009 to create awareness around the United Nations Copenhagen Climate Change talks and to “wake up” the Canadian government. Watch it with the kids in your life and then talk to them about what you are doing individually, as a family and as a community to fight for their future and for a world NOT torn apart by climate change.

Using the right of peaceful protest and civil disobedience, 1256 people (including our own Climate Mama) were arrested this summer to show their opposition to the building of a pipeline that would carry “tar sands” oil from Alberta, Canada to Texas (where most of it would be refined and shipped overseas) doubling the current number of barrels of oil imported by the US from Canada, and perpetuating the world’s addiction to fossil fuels.

The November 6th protest at the White House is a peaceful one, no one is planning on getting arrested. People will be joining hands in a human chain to “circle the White House,” asking President Obama to join hands with the people, and at the same time letting go of the “hands” of the big oil companies. We are asking the President to join us and help put people to work for a clean and renewable energy future – for our selves and our children!
