Paris, December 2015 | The most important meeting of the Planet | Will you be there?

By Yoca Arditi-Rocha

There are times when certain events define history and sometimes…even our fate. Coming December this year, Paris is that time. The time when all governments decide to act upon the biggest threat humanity & future generations have ever face, climate change.

As a mother, I don’t take these claims lightly. In fact, I have made it my mission to get people like you and me know and understand more about why is happening and what is at stake. For the past 9 years I have been calling upon climate action after having experienced the consecutive pounding of hurricanes in our home in Miami and my children’s schools seemed the perfect place to start. Several years have gone by and many more destructive climate related events (Katrina, Typhoon Haiyan, Sandy, California’s drought, Russia’s Heat wave, Colorado’s fires, Bangladesh’ floods…) are more recurring worldwide making even more evident and imperative that action was needed “yesterday…and now, today!

As a citizen, I get angry. I get angry of the lack of political will parties play -with our livelihoods at stake- just to keep standing in the political game. It’s obvious their best interest is not of the people, for the people, but for their agendas. After all, why would they allow fracking in our states polluting our waters, dispute the clean air act or ban the word climate change from state communications in one of the most vulnerable states already suffering from raising sea levels?

But as a professional, I now have hope. I have seen so much progress over the years that finally, just this past year, I’ve started to see a little dim light at the end of the tunnel. I’ve seen how countries like Costa Rica supplies their energy needs from 100% renewables, I’ve seen the biggest 500 fortune companies declare their support for climate friendly operations, mayors from cities around the world sign a global compact to commit to sustainability, seen the 2 biggest polluters (China & the US) come to agree to Act On Climate together and I have marched with over 400,000 people in NYC in solidarity for our planet regardless of faith or race. And not too long ago in Lima (COP20) I saw an agreement signed for the first time by all countries to commit to work together towards a common goal; keeping our planet’s rising temperature to at or below 2 degrees. That is the light that flickers at the end the tunnel now BUT that light needs to burn! Burn brightly because upon that light, our children’s future depends upon and there is still a lot of RED tape!

The Conference of Parties (COP21) of the United Nations Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) will convene again (for the 21st time) in Paris this December to decide upon the ways & the means of that global agreement. In other words, deciding our children’s & their children’s future.

There is so much RED tape around the “how” & the “why” to move forward that we’ve been stalling for years to get to a global agreement signed. Thus, the Cut The RED Tape Project was born. A platform to engage parents & school communities to Act On Climate and call upon political climate action! And so, you can’t blame me for asking you, one more time, for your help. We need a loud VOICE in Paris representing them. We need every mom, dad, brother, sister, aunt, uncle, grandma and grandpa, neighbors, schools, students, teachers and friends unite signing this petition so your (THEIR) voice be also in Paris this December. I PROMISE you I will personally deliver it myself to the UNFCCC’s secretary Christiana Figueres on my children’s & all of yours behalf. We are just a few hundreds now, but we can be thousands by just a few clicks. Would you share this petition with 5 people in your immediate circle and ask them to Cut the RED Tape on Climate Change?
